We have read so many great short stories, poems and a really great story. After reading them I fell in love with them but one stuck out to me the most. It was a short poem written by Gwendolyn Brooks called The Mother. In the poem, Brooks was discussing some positive points and negative points about abortion. Such positives were the bits of the child's life that the narrator was going to miss such as going to her child's wedding, comforting them through their trials and pains. Basically she was going to miss out on watching her child growing up and having the ability to enjoy a life. She talks about the negatives as well. The poem talks about how you will not abuse or neglect them (The Mother). Some people who have kids can be loving and wonderful and them some people can be violent and neglectful towards their children. So in that sense, abortion can be somewhat of a good thing. Another point that came out to me in the poem is that the narrator talks about that she did not want to have the abortion but she did it for the child's own good. Maybe because of poverty because of the year when the poem was written poverty was very strong. The main reason of why I love this poem is because somehow I feel like I can connect with the narrator. Even though I do not have kids nor have I ever gotten pregnant, I still feel like I can connect with the narrator and the poem touches my heart and makes me feel sympathetic for the narrator and the child she lost as well. For me I think it is out of a compassionate heart I have always had that I feel heartache for the narrator, even though I had never experienced what the narrator had.
